Legazpi City, November 12, 2013 – The Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office V steps up repacking of food packs for super typhoon “Yolanda” survivors in Region 8 – Eastern Visayas.

Repacking of Family Food Packs was started by the Field Office on Monday, November 11, 2013 at the Albay Astrodome with the help of civilian, police and military volunteers. Out of the 11,372 food packs produced on the same day 8,000 was initially allocated and transported to Samar.

At present, an additional of 3,296 family food packs was sent to Tacloban City. According to Regional Director Arnel B. Garcia, the food packs contains 3 kilos of rice, 7 canned goods, and 10 pieces coffee amounting to P257.30 per food pack. The repacking of food packs shall continue to ensure augmentation support to the relief operations in areas devastated by super typhoon Yolanda.

Meanwhile, the Department continues to assess the extent of damage caused by said super typhoon Yolanda. Based from the initial rapid assessment report as of November 13, 2013, 12 midnight, conducted by 22 DSWD Staff, a total of 21 Municipalities or Cities in the Province of Samar are affected.

Said affected Municipalities or Cities are Arteche, Balagiga, Balangkayan, Borongan, Can-abid, Dolores, Gen. Mc Arthur, Giporlos, Guian, Hernani, Lawaan, Llorente, Maydolong, Mercedes, Oras, Quinacondan, Salcedo, San Juan, San Policarpio, Sulat and Taft.

A total of 64,729 families or 202,817 persons are also affected due to the devastation brought by Super Typhoon Yolanda. At least 245 persons were killed, 75 persons are missing and 911 persons are injured.  Also, 13,221 houses are totally damaged, and 12,076 houses are partially damaged.

Regional Director Garcia said the initial reports recorded shall form part of the bases of on-going interventions and the rehabilitation plans that will be formulated the Department.

Moreover, to facilitate the receipt, acknowledgement and processing of donations, the DSWD has established donations desks manned by DSWD staff in the Six provinces in Bicol. ***lex. Armena/ee.jerusalem/g.lindio/c.barrameda
