The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Bicol has successfully disbursed P2.6 million in cash relief assistance to victims of fire incidents across the region in the first half of 2024. This significant support aims to help affected families recover and rebuild their lives.

Through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) Program, a total of 284 Bicolanos affected by fire incidents received immediate cash relief assistance, totaling PHP 2,610,000.00.

The funds have been allocated to provide immediate financial assistance to families who have lost their homes and belongings due to devastating fires. In February 2024, around 90 stall owners from Iriga City Public Market were affected by a fire incident in Camarines Sur, contributing to the 138 individuals served with cash relief assistance in the province. Following Camarines Sur is Masbate province, with 50 clients served, Albay Province with 37 fire victims, Sorsogon with 33 clients, Camarines Norte with 20 clients, and Catanduanes with six clients.

DSWD Bicol’s timely intervention has been crucial in addressing the urgent needs of the victims, ensuring they receive the necessary support to start anew.

DSWD Bicol Regional Director Norman S. Laurio reiterated that the immediate assistance provided to fire-hit victims includes more than just cash. He mentioned the distribution of Family Food Packs, non-food items such as hygiene kits, and the provision of psychosocial interventions to affected families and individuals, especially children and senior citizens.

“We are committed to providing immediate and effective relief to those affected not only by fire incidents but by all natural and man-made disasters,” said RD Laurio.

“In DSWD, our goal is not only to lead in the formulation of social welfare and development services in aiding the poor, vulnerable, and disadvantaged communities. Through the Department’s programs under the Crisis Intervention Section (CIS) and Disaster Response Management Division (DRMD), our aim is to alleviate the suffering of individuals disrupted by sudden crises and assist them in their journey towards recovery,” he elaborated.

The disbursement of this substantial amount highlights DSWD Bicol’s dedication to serving the community and responding swiftly to emergencies. The Department continues to work closely with local government units and other agencies to ensure that assistance reaches those in need promptly.#
