CAMALIG, ALBAY – DSWD Field Office V, in collaboration with the Local Government Unit of Camalig, has successfully conducted a comprehensive goat raising training for the Maninila Camalig Association in Albay. This initiative aims to bolster food security and provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for local residents.

The training, a part of DSWD’s ongoing efforts to enhance food security and promote sustainable livelihoods in rural communities, engaged 24 members of the Maninila Camalig Goat Raising SLP Association. Participants eagerly embraced modern techniques in goat farming, supported by a Seed Capital Fund of PHP 300,000.00 to jumpstart their ventures.

Beyond goat raising, participants underwent training in Business Management and Organizational Management, covering Basic Business Management, Micro Enterprise Development, Financial Literacy, and Leadership. These sessions equipped them with crucial skills to effectively manage their enterprises and ensure long-term viability.

Experts from the Albay Small Ruminant Association and Municipal Agriculture Office, including Mr. Jehu Oxiano and Mr. Edmark Sim, shared invaluable insights on breeding, feeding, and health management in goat farming. They underscored sustainable farming practices and the economic benefits of integrating goat farming with other agricultural activities for diversified income streams.

Goats provide nutritious meat and milk, aiding agricultural diversification and serving as income sources for small-scale farmers. The goat raising training represents a significant milestone in SLP’s mission to empower communities and fortify food security. By imparting training and resources, DSWD Bicol enables participants to attain sustainable livelihoods and contribute to local food supply.

Regional Director Norman S. Laurio affirmed DSWD’s commitment to addressing regional food security concerns: “Under Secretary Rex Gatchalian’s directive, SLP prioritizes projects that not only create income opportunities but also strengthen food security frameworks.”

DSWD’s SLP initiatives continue to make a profound impact by promoting food security and sustainable livelihoods. The goat raising training in Barangay Maninila, Camalig, exemplifies the program’s dedication to empowering individuals and fostering resilient communities.
