Jennifer R. Bacsain, a Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) from Barangay Santo Domingo, Nabua, Camarines Sur, knows all too well the struggles of living in poverty. She often tells her family, “Ang hirap maging mahirap, kaya ang edukasyon ang tanging puhunan,” highlighting how education is their only hope for a better future. Since 2012, her family has been part of 4Ps, and they’ve faced daily battles just to make ends meet.
Marlon, Jennifer’s husband, works tirelessly as a tricycle driver, while Jennifer stays home to care for their children. With Marlon’s modest earnings, the family sometimes manages just one or two meals a day. Their small, fragile house is prone to flooding, but despite these hardships, Jennifer and Marlon remain hopeful and optimistic for their children’s future. They believe that their children’s dreams and love are their greatest blessings.
Jason, their eldest son, has shown remarkable determination. While juggling his studies, he worked as a personal driver to help support the family. Marlon made sure Jason’s education did not become a financial burden. Today, Jason is a proud member of the Philippine Navy’s special operations force in Legazpi City. His hard work and dedication have not only uplifted his family but have also inspired his siblings to strive for their dreams.
Marjorie, the second child, has achieved so much, holding licenses as an electronics technician and License Examination for Teacher passer, thanks to being an Expanded Students Grants-in-Aid Program for Poverty Alleviation (ESGP-PA) scholar under Pantawid since 2013. Christine Ann, the third child, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education and now works in a factory in Manila. Joshua, the fourth child, is also serving in the Philippine Navy’s special operations force, stationed in Cavite. Meanwhile, the youngest, George, is a Grade 11 student at Nabua High School, continuing his studies with the program’s support.
Jennifer often reflects on how the Pantawid Program has been a lifeline for her family. It provided them with the essentials for well-being, nutrition, and education, enabling her children to pursue their dreams of securing stable jobs. The family remains deeply grateful for the support they’ve received and the opportunities it has opened up for them.
Through all the struggles and triumphs, the Bacsain family’s story is a testament to the power of hope, hard work, and the belief that education can break the cycle of poverty.
