Electricity has become quite important in today’s culture and is a vital part of functioning as a society. Apart from its social benefits, electricity is also a driving factor for the progress of an economy. Its usage certainly ranges from communication and transportation to production and has, undeniably, become a modern need of mankind. Moreover, people from different walks of life use electricity, either for communication, work and even entertainment, to make their lives easier. Basically, everything people use in their households is powered by electricity and families would definitely be productive in their chores if they have access to electricity.
However, based on the July 2011 data of the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction (NHTS-PR) or the Listahanan of the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office V revealed that the poor households who have no access to electricity is still halfway from the total poor households regionwide. The areas still with no access to electricity can be found in the provinces of Masbate, Camarines Sur and Sorsogon.
Furthermore, statistics show that 61.5% of the poor households located in the urban areas have access in electricity while 52.9% or 122,918 in rural areas have no access to electricity. Lack of access to modern energy services indicates poverty, deprivation and limited economic development.
Limited access to electricity is a barrier to the betterment of lives of the poor families. This situation serves as a call for every organization to implement projects to solve this dilemma as well as to extend their help to those families who still do not have access to electricity particularly in the provinces of Masbate, Camarines Sur and Sorsogon.###
